Introduction
We were recently trusted to replace an ageing oil boiler at a domestic property near Denbigh in Conwy. The existing system was not only inefficient but also unacceptably noisy, particularly during the night, as it disturbed the residents’ sleep. Therefore, it was essential to install a modern, renewable heating solution that would also operate with minimal noise. Our challenge was to deliver an energy-efficient upgrade that would improve comfort without compromising on peace and quiet.
Methodology
Following an in-depth site survey, we recommended the installation of a Samsung 16kW EHS (Air to Water Heating) Mono HT Quiet air source heat pump. This model is specially engineered for domestic properties, delivering high water temperatures while maintaining exceptionally low noise levels. Rated A+++ for energy efficiency, it generates 5.0kW of heat using only 1kW of electricity, with the remaining energy harvested from ambient air.
The home featured K2-style radiators, which require hot water temperatures of at least 65°C for optimal performance. While standard heat pumps typically output water at 55°C to 60°C, the EHS Mono HT Quiet consistently achieves temperatures up to 70°C, making it a seamless replacement for traditional oil boilers. This capability also eliminated the need for costly upgrades to the existing central heating system.
We were impressed by the unit’s advanced noise-reduction features, including a 4-step Quiet mode and double-layered sound insulation with patented Groove Grid Felt design, enabling it to operate as quietly as 35 dB(A). Its Quiet Mark certification reassured the homeowner that sound would not be an issue.
Installation
Our team began by removing the old Worcester Bosch oil boiler, carefully disconnecting the associated pipework and sealing the external flue hole. The new Samsung air source heat pump was mounted securely next to an external wall, with power and pipework routed back into the property. The remaining equipment was installed in an attic space, hidden from view but still easily accessible. We fitted a 200L Joule hot water cylinder along with all necessary pipework and carried out thorough system testing. Finally, we provided the homeowner with a full demonstration to ensure they were comfortable with their new heating system.
Outcome
As the resident was highly sensitive to noise, the quiet operation of the new heat pump proved to be a perfect solution. It can now run at any time of day or night without disturbance. The homeowner described our team as reliable, pleasant, and helpful throughout the entire process.
