Introduction
We recently completed a renewable heating project in a small village near Corwen, Denbighshire. Our goal was to replace an outdated oil boiler with a modern air source heat pump, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing the property’s carbon footprint. After a thorough evaluation of the site, we chose a Samsung 8kW Heat Pump for its affordability, reliability, and exceptional performance in the varying weather conditions of North Wales.
Methodology
Our initial step involved a detailed survey of the property to assess its heating requirements and the feasibility of installing an air source heat pump. Based on our findings, we selected the Samsung 8kW EHS Monobloc Heat Pump, known for its eco-friendly design and efficient performance, even in temperatures as low as -25°C. The unit’s low-noise operation, producing just 50 dB(A) at a distance of one metre, was particularly appealing to the homeowner.
Installation
The installation process commenced with the removal of the old oil boiler, which was housed in the utility room. This space was repurposed to accommodate a brand new Kodiak 200L hot water cylinder by Joule. The pre-plumbed pack of the Kodiak cylinder, designed specifically for use with heat pumps, provided accurate control over heat distribution across different zones within the home.
We utilised the existing flue hole to route the new water pipes outside, connecting them to the heat pump and insulating them from the cold. Recognising that heat pumps operate at lower flow temperatures than traditional boilers, we upgraded all radiators throughout the property. This was essential to ensure a larger radiator surface area, allowing the heat pump to heat the home efficiently. All associated pipework was replaced to optimise the system’s performance.
Once the heat pump, cylinder, radiators, and pipework installation were complete, we conducted a comprehensive test of the entire system. This included verifying the operational efficiency and ensuring that the heat distribution met the required standards.
Outcome
Installing the Samsung 8kW air source heat pump significantly improved the property’s energy efficiency. The new system provides reliable heating and hot water, maintaining comfort throughout the home even during the coldest months. The homeowner reported a noticeable reduction in energy bills and appreciated the quiet operation of the heat pump.
By replacing the outdated oil boiler with a modern, eco-friendly heat pump, we not only reduced the property’s carbon footprint but also provided a sustainable heating solution that will serve the household for many years.
