Introduction
We recently completed a project in Blaenau Ffestiniog, a beautiful mining town in Gwynedd, North Wales. The plan was to replace an old coal-fired heating system with a modern biomass solution in a home undergoing an extensive renovation. This case study details the methodology, installation, funding, and outcomes of the project, showcasing the successful transition to a more sustainable and efficient heating system.
Methodology
The project began with a comprehensive assessment of the homeowner’s heating needs and the available space within the property. After careful consideration, we selected the Klover SMART 120 as the most suitable biomass boiler for the home. This model was chosen for its fully automated functionality, 17.5 kW heat output, and ability to meet the household’s entire central heating and hot water needs. Additionally, the SMART 120’s contemporary design, with a black and brushed stainless steel finish, complemented the large wood and stone feature fireplace.
Installation
The Klover SMART 120, with its 32-kilo pellet internal hopper, was installed as the centrepiece in the fireplace. The system’s top flue was used to direct exhaust up and out of the chimney, ensuring efficient venting. Alongside the boiler installation, we fitted all new pipework throughout the property and installed a large hot water cylinder in the roof space to ensure optimal hot water storage and distribution.
To enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of the heating system, we installed new cast iron-style traditional anthracite radiators of various sizes around the property. With their vintage look, these radiators were chosen to match the property’s style while providing excellent heat output to keep the space warm during the colder months. Copper traditional thermostatic radiator valves were added to complement the radiators and complete the look.
Funding
A significant advantage of replacing the existing coal heating system with a biomass solution was the eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) funding. This government incentive supports the decarbonisation of heating in buildings by offering financial assistance. We successfully claimed £5,000 in funding towards the cost of the Klover boiler, significantly reducing the project’s making the project much more affordable for the homeowner.
Outcome
The Klover SMART 120 not only provided a reliable and efficient heating solution but also enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the home. The new heating system operates at over 90% efficiency due to Klover’s advanced combustion system, ensuring that the homeowner benefits from lower energy costs for years to come.
The replacement of the coal-fired system with a biomass solution resulted in a significant reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with the homeowner’s environmental goals. They also liked the contemporary design and functionality of the new heating system, particularly its automated features and high efficiency.
In conclusion, the project in Blaenau Ffestiniog is an excellent example of how modern biomass solutions can replace outdated heating systems, offering both environmental and financial benefits. Through careful planning, expert installation by our team, and government incentives, we successfully delivered a heating solution that meets the needs of the present while considering the sustainability of the future.
