Installation of Solar Thermal Kit and Telford 300L Solar Cylinder In Denbighshire

Introduction

Nixon Plumbing and Heating recently completed the installation of a solar thermal kit, including a Telford 300L solar cylinder, for a residential property located in Denbighshire. This case study provides an overview of the project, detailing the steps taken by Nixon Plumbing and Heating to successfully complete the installation. The project involved removing and disposing of the old system and thoroughly testing the new system upon completion.

Project Scope

The primary objective of the project was to upgrade the residential property’s hot water system by installing a solar thermal kit. The project encompassed the following key elements:

  1. Removal and disposal of the existing system: Nixon Plumbing and Heating’s team dismantled and responsibly disposed of the outdated hot water system that was previously installed at the property.
  2. Installation of a Telford 300L solar cylinder: The solar cylinder was selected as an ideal replacement for the old system. It offers improved energy efficiency and thermal performance.
  3. Installation of solar tubes on a concrete pad: A concrete pad was constructed in the garden area to provide a stable foundation for the solar tubes. The solar tubes were then securely mounted on the pad, ensuring optimal exposure to sunlight.
  4. Testing and commissioning: Once the installation was complete, Nixon Plumbing and Heating conducted thorough testing to ensure the proper functioning of the new system. This included testing for leaks, checking water flow, and verifying the efficiency of the solar thermal kit.

Methodology

The installation process followed a systematic approach to ensure a high-quality and reliable solar thermal system for the customer. The steps involved in the project were as follows:

  1. Site assessment: Nixon Plumbing and Heating’s team visited the property to assess the existing system, the available space for installation, and the solar radiation potential in the area. This assessment helped determine the appropriate solar thermal kit and the optimal location for the solar tubes.
  2. System design and component selection: Based on the assessment, Nixon Plumbing and Heating designed a custom solution that included the Telford 300L solar cylinder and the required number of solar tubes. The design aimed to maximise energy efficiency and meet the hot water demands of the property.
  3. Removal and disposal of the old system: The existing hot water system was carefully dismantled and responsibly disposed of, following environmental regulations.
  4. Construction of the concrete pad: A concrete pad was constructed in the garden area to support the solar tubes. The pad was designed to withstand the weight of the tubes and provide stability against environmental factors.
  5. Solar tube installation: The solar tubes were securely mounted on the concrete pad, ensuring they were positioned at the optimal angle and orientation to capture sunlight efficiently. The necessary plumbing connections were made to integrate the tubes with the Telford 300L solar cylinder.
  6. Testing and commissioning: Nixon Plumbing and Heating conducted a series of tests to verify the integrity and performance of the new system. This included pressure tests, leak checks, flow rate measurement, and verification of the solar thermal kit’s efficiency in generating hot water.

Results

The installation of the solar thermal kit, including the Telford 300L solar cylinder, was completed successfully by Nixon Plumbing and Heating. The new system provided several benefits, including:

  1. Enhanced energy efficiency: The solar thermal system utilised the sun’s energy to heat the water, reducing the property’s reliance on conventional energy sources and lowering energy bills.
  2. Reduced carbon footprint: By harnessing renewable solar energy, the system contributed to a significant reduction in the property’s carbon emissions.
  3. Reliable hot water supply: The Telford 300L solar cylinder provided ample hot water.
