Introduction
We helped a homeowner in Trawsfynydd, a village in Gwynedd near the Llyn Trawsfynydd reservoir, install a new biomass boiler. The existing heating system was outdated, and sourcing spare parts for repairs was becoming increasingly difficult due to obsolescence. The homeowner, who owns sustainably managed woodland, wished to continue using log gasification, a technology he had relied upon for some time.
Methodology
After considering several options, we selected a next-generation gasification boiler manufactured by Arikazan, a company with over 60 years of experience. The Ventum 30kW Log Gasification Boiler was the ideal solution due to its quiet operation and high efficiency. The boiler features a spacious combustion chamber, allowing for a generous volume of wood to be loaded, thereby providing up to seven hours of continuous heating. Additionally, its design includes large heat-absorbing surfaces, extended hot gas passages, and pre-heated intake air, making it one of the most efficient products on the market.
Installation
The first step involved removing the existing boiler from the utility room and preparing the space for the new system. The installation posed a significant challenge due to the weight of the new boiler, which was a substantial 480kg. However, our team successfully manoeuvred it into position using rollers, planks, and long steel bars. Once positioned, the Ventum boiler was connected to the existing heating system and flue before undergoing a full commissioning process to ensure it was ready for use.
Outcome
A single full burn of the new system is capable of heating 1,400 litres of water, meaning that during the coldest months, the boiler only needs to be ignited once a day. In the warmer summer months, it is used just once a week to provide hot water. The client was particularly impressed with the quality and ease of use of the system, appreciating its simple electronic controls and easy access cleaning mechanism, which allows for easy maintenance with a simple pull of a lever. Overall, the installation has provided the customer with an efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly heating solution.
This system is classified as renewable due to its 90% efficiency in burning wood, with emissions significantly below European regulations. Additionally, the customer benefits from a backup immersion heater powered by his photovoltaic system.
